Call for Submissions for “Rooted in Practice: Pinays in Law” - Deadline Extended

Rooted in Practice: Rooted in Practice: Pinays in Law, an anthology of first-person narratives—essays, stories, poems, doodles—that centers the experiences of Pinay attorneys and other Pinays in law.  

If you are interested in submitting your piece to be published in the Pinay Powerhouse anthology, please submit your piece of a maximum of 2,000 words by June 30, 2022, along with your headshot, bio and quote here.

Pinay Powerhouse Foundation Update

The Pinay Powerhouse 501(c)(3) committee is working diligently to get our status filed this summer! We have a pro bono business law Pinay Powerhouse assisting us. We’ve also met an accountant and hope to hire this person to help us with our bookkeeping, etc.

If anyone on the collective is interested in joining the future Foundation board, especially if they would like to learn new skills in the marketing/communications arena, please let us know! Or if you have a shining recommendation, we would like to continue the pipeline and need enthusiastic Pinay Powerhouses to help run our c(3)!

Power Panel with Pinay Trial Lawyers

Our April Power Panel is here! This month, the NFALA Women’s Committee and Pinay Powerhouse Collective is proud to present a Power Panel featuring:

Lorinda D. Franco, California Office of the Attorney General

Angela Makabali, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California

Connie A. Montoya, Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP

The panel will feature Pinay litigators and trial attorneys, and will discuss how gender bias impacts women litigators and will provide practical advice on how women can navigate these challenges to succeed in their careers.

This will be a live virtual power panel moderated by NFALA Women’s Committee Co-Chair Natalie Garcia Lashinsky.

Monthly Virtual Circles

Every month, the Pinay Powerhouse Collective hosts a virtual circle intentionally cultivated for self-identified Pinay Powerhouse attorneys and aspiring attorneys.

Sessions will not be recorded and all participants agree to keep what is shared within the circle.

The May 4, 2022 Circle, “Our Inays, a Mother’s Day edition”, will be facilitated by Pinay Powerhouse Andrella Gonzales.

Recent Event

Power Chat with the Hon. Christine J. Gonong on March 29, 2022

We had an incredible turnout at the Power Chat with the Honorable Christine J. Gonong which was moderated by Pinay Powerhouse Co-Founder Mari Bandoma Callado on March 29, 2020. Commissioner Gonong talked about her experience attending the 2021 Judicial Academy for Aspiring Judges and her path to becoming a commissioner in the Superior Court of Los Angeles. She also shared what advice she would have given her 16-year-old self today (Commissioner Gonong moved to the United States at 16 and is the first person in her family to graduate from an American university) as well as advice for those looking to transition to serving as judicial officers. Attendees were also given the opportunity to share how proud they were of Commissioner Gonong. Below is a message from Commissioner Gonong:

10,000 ancestors who came before me and those who walked alongside me, including my Pinay Powerhouse sisters, who have not wavered in their support, mentorship, and friendship.

Thanks to all of you for your support over the years and for celebrating my recent election as Commissioner of the Los Angeles Superior Court. Mabuhay!
